Sarbjit the film’s producer Vashu Bhagnani confirmed that he is sending the heart-rending movie to the Oscars. “We will send it as an entry, independently or in the race with other films. We will channelise our energy to make sure Sarbjit is in the race to become India’s entry to the Oscar this year,” he said.

Bhagnani also wants to send the movie for the National Film Awards that are instituted by the Government of India. He said, “We will also enrol the film as one of the competitors in the bid for National Awards.”

Sarbjit, directed by Omung Kumar, is a biopic of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian man who crossed over into Pakistan by mistake and paid for it with his life. The touching story made international headlines and was made into a film starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Randeep Hooda, Richa Chadha and Darshan Kumar. Sarabjit Singh was captured by Pakistan and put in jail, labelled as a spy. One of his sisters, Dalbir Kaur (Aishwarya in the film), fought for his release all her life. Sarabjit Singh was almost released but died in a Pakistani jail after he was reportedly attacked by other inmates.
