All-Swiss semi-final at US Open as Federer faces Wawrinka

NEW YORK: World No.2 Roger Federer is just one-step closer for his first US Open final since 2009 and for that he has to beat some one very familiar to him, his Davis Cup and Swiss Olympic teammate World No.5 Stan Wawrinka.

Last night, the 34 year-old Federer qualified for his 10th US Open semi-final at Flushing Meadows and a record 38th in all Grand Slams. The No.2 seed Federer and No.5 Wawrinka won their quarter-final match in quite similar way, a very comprehensive win for both Swiss internationals.

Both of them registered three straight set victories over their opponent, Federer defeated 12th seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It just took him 1 hour and 20 minutes to finish the match, while Wawrinka eliminated South Africa’s 15th seeded Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 who was playing his first quarter-final of any Grand Slam.

After winning the match against Gasquet, Federer said that I like to play that way, but at my age giving the same treatment to five other opponents at US Open. I don’t consider that normal, I don’t feel like as old as I’m, I still feel that I’m young. But it’s nice to get awarded with your hard work at any age.

Talking about his Davis Cup teammate Wawrinka said that according to him Federer is flying on the court, while the 17-times Grand Slam champion said that to be quite honest I’m happy about Wawrinka. Two Swiss in the semi-finals of the US Open is cool for both of us.
