Barbara Turner, actress, screenwriter and mother to Jennifer Jason Leigh, dies at 79770 views
Barbara Turner, an Emmy-nominated screenwriter and mother to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, died on Tuesday at the age of 79.
Turner died at her Los Angeles home, Variety magazine reported.
She penned the scripts for emotionally charged works like “Petulia,” “Pollock” and “Georgia” — the latter starring her daughter, Jason Leigh.
The Manhattan native began her Hollywood career by acting in “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and “Playhouse 90″ throughout the late ’50s.
Her first run at creating a screenplay came in 1966 with an adaptation of the Jean Genet play “Deadwatch.”
She quickly earned recognition for her work, receiving a Writers’ Guild of America nomination for “Petulia.” She later garnered two Emmy nominations and a Montreal Film Festival’s Grand Prix of the Americas for “Georgia,” among other notable awards.
Along with Jason Leigh, Turner is survived by two other daughters, Carrie Ann Morrow and Mina Badiyi Chassler; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
