Campaigner Alamgir Khan indicted in garbage dumping case696 views
KARACHI: Campaigner Alamgir Khan and his driver were formally indicted in a local court in garbage dumping case .
Khan, a Karachi-based social activist whose ‘#FixIt’ campaign to cover unsealed manholes gained media attention, was arrested and released on bail last month along with his driver for attempting to dump garbage near Chief Minister House.
Today, a formal charge sheet was presented against Khan and the driver, Saif, in City Court before Judicial Magistrate South. They were charged with attempting to litter Sindh CM House in Red Zone and block vehicular traffic.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty, claiming that it was a “symbolic garbage dump.”
The judge later adjourned the case and summoned witnesses of in next hearing on April 8.
Despite Sindh government’s pressure, Khan is aggressively running “Kachra Uthao” (clean up garbage) campaign in Karachi aimed at cleansing the city of trash.
In January, Alamgir Khan came into media spotlight when he kicked off a campaign for civic facilities in Karachi painting Sindh Chief Minister’s face next to uncovered gutters.
He later expanded his drive by putting covers of manholes and picking garbage through his tractor in different areas of the city.
