COAS meets PM, urges Panama solution545 views
ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday and expressed his concern over prevailing political situation in the country in the wake of Panama Leaks.
Sources privy to the meeting told that General Raheel Sharif told the prime minister said that Panama Leaks could have a negative impact on economic activities and the overall security situation in the country.
“The matter should be resolved swiftly in a positive manner,” he stressed.
Sources further said that Prime Minister Sharif and army chief agreed on accountability of corrupt elements and eradication of corruption.
Minister of State for Privatization Mohammad Zubair Khan, however, denied reports that the Panama Leaks issue was taken up by the army chief.
“It was a routine meeting between the head of state and the army chief,” he said, urging media to refrain from making speculations.
“Neither the army chief talked about the Panama papers nor he did he express any concern in this regard,” added Zubair.
The meeting comes a day after International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) released a second batch of the Panama Leaks, revealing names of around 220 Pakistanis.
Yesterday, opposition parties announced that they would boycott the ongoing sessions of National Assembly and Senate unless Prime Minister Sharif returned to Parliament and presented his stance on the Panama Leaks.
