Directors really need to start giving me different roles now: Prachi Desai

The gorgeous Prachi Desai will soon be seen playing the role of Naureen, former wife of Mohammad Azharuddin in Tony D’souza’s ‘Azhar’. The character certainly carries in it multiple layers and is not easy to be executed.

We have always seen Prachi performing intense characters. The ones which are rather serious. But the actress says she is exactly opposite of how we see her on the screen!

In a recent interaction, we asked if she wants to try her hands at some different roles too. “I hope the industry wakes up to seeing the real me, which is long overdue! They keep exploiting somebody’s image over and over again. It’s like, you took a chance and it worked. Because earlier certain things worked for me, everybody wants to keep repeating that. But that’s not the real me! I am actually looking for something more youth-centric, something which is more suited to my age, where the co-actors are more of my age,” the actress laughed.

Off late, Bollywood has had films like ‘Queen’, ‘Neerja’ and more; films that are carried out solely by the female lead. In many instances, female characters now have a gravity like never before. Is she up for a women-centric film as well?

“For an actor, it is the most fulfilling thing when you get an opportunity like that. I would love to do something like that,” she answered.

Filmmakers, are you listening?

A simple Gujarati girl, Prachi was born in Surat and studied till the ninth standard in St. Joseph Convent. She completed her higher studies in Sinhagad College in Pune. As a student, she won many prizes for her active participation in dancing and acting competitions. She had just completed her junior college studies when she gave it up to pursue a different career.

2006 brought a new turn in Prachi’s life when she got selected to play the lead role in soap-queen Ekta Kapoor’s television drama Kasamh Se. Her character ‘Bani’ opposite TV actor Ram Kapoor became a milestone and she became a popular face in every household. She won the Best Actress awards at many television awards functions like the Indian Telly Award and Sansui Television Award.

Prachi Desai also did a cameo in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, another popular show by Ekta Kapoor. Thereafter, she appeared in a dance reality show called Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa along with choreographer Deepak Singh. Despite getting eliminated in the initial stages, she returned as a wild card entry and eventually went on to win the show. She also headed a team of young dancers in another dance show ‘Yeh Hai Jalwa’, but was eliminated soon.

The bubbly actress then made a transition to the film industry in 2008. She debuted in Abhishek Kapoor-directed ‘Rock On!!’ opposite Farhan Akhtar. Although the film was not a major box office earner, her performance was much acclaimed and appreciated by critics and audiences alike. The film won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, and Prachi won awards for the best debut. Her next film Life Partner, opposite Tusshar Kapoor, was a failure.

In 2010, she bounced back with Milan Luthria’s film ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’ along with Emraan Hashmi, Ajay Devgn and Kangana Ranaut. She delivered a splendid performance which is why she grabbed the Best Supporting Actress awards and nominations at many award functions like IIFA Awards, Apsara Film & Television Producers Guild Awards, Stardust Awards, Zee Cine Awards and Star Screen Awards.

Because of her impressive performance, filmmaker Kunal Kohli cast her in a cameo role in his film ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’. Although the role was small, Prachi received much recognition for it. This was followed by Rohit Shetty’s film Bol Bachchan, starring Ajay Devgn opposite Asin and Prachi opposite Abhishek Bachchan. While the film went on to earn 100-plus crores at the box office, the actress garnered many eyeballs for her charming looks and noteworthy acting.

Up next, Prachi will be seen in ‘I, Me Aur Main’, directed by comedian-turned director Kapil Sharma and produced by Goldie Behl. The film stars John Abraham in the lead role. Prachi’s fans can also expect her in K. S. Ravikumar’s first Bollywood film which will have Sanjay Dutt and Prakash Raj.
