A research study has revealed that the women who are suffering from obesity are not capable of distinguishing between tastes as flavors are either too strong or hard to distinguish between them.

The results illustrated that women with anorexia nervosa, and those who were obese, had complicatedness in distinguishing amid ordinary water and sugar water contrasted to the controlled group and those who had well again from anorexia nervosa.

Guido Frank, who is the lead author of the study from University of Colorado, stated that “Taste is an important driver of food intake and invariably associated with distinct neuronal patterns in the insula — the brain’s primary taste cortex,” Guido Frank further added by saying that “If you can’t differentiate between tastes, that could impact how much you eat and that can also activate or not activate brain reward circuits,” The paper was presented in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

Atypical eating patterns were connected with alterations in the insula’s capability to classify taste stimuli.

The team examined 106 women contributors of the same age who underwent brain imaging whereas tasting sugar water or a flavorless water solution to examine that how well the insula could distinguish amid the flavors. These alterations could happen on an array of levels. For instance, leptin and further hormones are changed in obesity and eating disorders, influencing how the brain reacts to food.

The decreased capability of the insula to classify taste could be because of structural alterations inside this brain area or then again could effect in changed taste signal processing in diverse pathways to the insula, Frank elaborated.

It moreover points out that these issues reduce once a person approaches a healthy weight. The results could direct to novel treatments for eating disorders.
