Indian dargah issues fatwa against KFC outlet

A team of Dargah-e-Ala Hazrat visited the particular outlet where the authorities showed them a certificate issued by a Mufti of Mumbai.

A prominent dargah in Bareilly has issued a fatwa, an Islamic decree, against popular food outlet KFC alleging that the meat served there was not ‘halal’ and asked all Muslims to abstain from eating there as it would be a ‘sin’.

Mufti Saleem Noori, spokesperson of the influential Dargah-e-Ala Hazrat, said while the fatwa issued on Saturday is particularly for the KFC outlet at Bareilly, it also targets other non-vegetarian food selling outlets across India who do not follow the ‘halal’ norms.

“Some people have approached me with complaints against KFC Bareilly for not selling halal meat (food that adheres to Islamic law) and thus it is forbidden to consume it according to Islam,” Noori said, talking to The Indian Express.

A team of Dargah-e-Ala Hazrat visited the particular outlet where the authorities showed them a certificate issued by a Mufti of Mumbai. When the Dargah authorities contacted this Mufti, he claimed that he did not issue any certificate to KFC.

“The Mufti from Mumbai told us that he has issued a certificate to a firm selling non-vegetarian items a few years ago. When we contacted this firm, they told us that they had a tie-up with KFC back then, but that agreement ended three years ago. Hence the certificate shown at the KFC outlet is old and illegitimate, thus deeming the meat sold there as ‘not halal’ and eating it is a sin for a Muslim,” Noori said.

Noori further said that the halal certificates shown at the stores has no relevance if the store owners and workers could not give details about the procedure followed to process the meat. Furthermore, the meat is processed away from the eyes of Muslims making it haram, the cleric said. “Halal is not only about killing the animal it is also about the way the meat is processed and cooked. The KFC stores do not process or cook the meat in an Islamic way which makes it haram. The meat is not always processed by a Muslim which, too, makes it unfit for eating,” said the mufti.
