Iran’s President Rouhani arrives in Islamabad today


ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani arriving in Islamabad today on a two-day visit of Pakistan to hold talks with Pakistani leadership on cooperation in energy sector and host of other issues.

President Rouhani visiting Pakistan to discuss Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline project, oil and electricity exports and othe issues of mutual interest.

The visit has assumed significance after lifting of international sanctions on Iran that has opened new avenues for enhancing economic interaction.

The sanctions on Iran thoroughly hurt the bilateral trade between Pakistan and Iran, the volume of which went down to US dollars 120 mln per annum from one billion dollars.

A high-level delegation comprising ministers, senior officials and businessmen will be accompanied with President Rouhani on his first visit to Pakistan.

Daily 20,000 litres of petrol and diesel being smuggled from Iran to the neighboring countries causing huge losses to the national exchequer, industry sources said. After lifting of the sanctions the legal trade with the neighboring countries will help to curb the illegal oil trade.

During his meetings with President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the Iranian President will discuss cooperation on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Foreign Office has said that the two-day visit of Dr Rouhani would enhance the existing fraternal ties between the two countries.
