‘LAGAAN’ Star Cast – Then And Now!1,604 views
It has been 15 long years since the release of Ashutosh Gowariker’s epic sports-drama film ‘Lagaan’. The movie, set in the period of British raj, saw some of the finest performances of the decade, and went on to win eight National Film Awards, and nine Filmfares. The finesse of the film can be judged from the fact that it was nominated in the Oscars for the best foreign language film. Though it lost the award to ‘No Man’s Land’, but it was a big feat for an Indian movie to be a part of the Oscars, after ‘Mother India’ and ‘Salaam Bombay’.
The movie starred Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh in the lead roles of Bhuvan and Gauri, with actors like Raghubir Yadav, Raj Zutshi, Pradeep Rawat, and Yashpal Sharma in pivotal roles. British actors like Rachel Shelley as Elizabeth Russell, and Paul Blackthorne as Captain Andrew Russell too made a powerful impact with their performances.
Let’s take a look at the actors, 15 years after ‘Lagaan’!
AAMIR KHAN – THEN AND NOW
Aamir Khan is undoubtedly the perfectionist of Bollywood and his varied roles in movies over the years have just proved his calibre as an actor. Now, he will be fighting it out in a wrestler centric movie ‘Dangal’ where he is seen in a beefed up look.
GRACY SINGH – THEN AND NOW
This was the star studded debut of the pretty Gracy Singh, who was the lead in the TV series ‘Amanat’. Gracy starred in the hit ‘Munna Bhai M.b.B.S.’, but her career pretty much went downhill after that. Currently, Gracy can be seen essaying the role of a Goddess Santoshi Maa in the series ‘Jai Santoshi Maa.’
RACHEL SHELLEY – THEN AND NOW
This gorgeous light eyed British beauty, was simply mesmerizing in the role of Elizabeth Russell who falls for Aamir in the movie. After ‘Lagaan’, she has been a part of many TV shows like ‘L Word’, ‘Ghost’, ‘Casualty’, ‘Once Upon a Time’, ‘Rogue’ etc.
PAUL BLACKTHORNE – THEN AND NOW
His portrayal of the ruthless Captain Russell made us hate him,, but we can’t deny the fact that he is one dashing guy in real life. Paul went on to star in several TV shows after ‘Lagaan’. He is a philanthropist and also initiated a campaign ‘Save The Rhino’ which got the support of Aamir Khan as well.
PRADEEP RAWAT – THEN AND NOW
This ‘Ghajini’ villain was a Sardar in the movie whose main aim was to throw Britishers out of India. He went on to do many South films later on and his menacing role as ‘Ghajini’ still gives us nightmares.
RAGHUBIR YADAV – THEN AND NOW
The brother of Rajpal Yadav, he is a veteran actor who has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood. His portrayal of Bhura was likeable and so real. He too started off his career with TV show ‘Mullah Nasiruddin and Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne’. Last seen in the hit flick ‘Piku’, he was quite convincing in the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s doctor Dr. Srivastava.
YASHPAL SHARMA – THEN AND NOW
Lakha was the prodigal factor in the movie, who initially acted as a double agent, but then came back to his own side. He was also shown to be in love with Gauri, hence his rifts with the character of Bhuvan. Yashpal Sharma, who played the complex role, has been a part of several movies like ‘Gangaajal’, ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’, ‘Aaja Nachle’, ‘Singh Is Kinng’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’ and is one of the most preferred choices for negative roles in movies.
AKHILENDRA MISHRA – THEN AND NOW
He played the role of the man with a temper, Arjan in ‘Lagaan’. Apart from this movie, he has been a part of movies like ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’, ‘Gangaajal’, ‘Veer-Zaara’, ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’, ‘Delhi-6’, ‘Ready’. He also played the role of Ravana in ‘Ramayan’ serial.
