Malaysian Gymnast Farah criticized for revealing ‘aurat’ despite winning two Gold Medals

A Malaysian Muslim Gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi has been richly criticized on social media for revealing her ‘aurat’ despite winning six medals at Southeast Asian (SEA) Games including two Golds.

Meanwhile, the 21 year-old athlete Farah was unexpectedly defended by her fans and supporters. After being criticized by a Facebook group for revealing her ‘aurat’, which refers to different body parts such as thighs which are required to be covered in Islam.

Farah received criticism for wearing the customary sportswear for female gymnasts, talking about the same issue a senior Islamic scholar Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakria.

He said, ‘If Muslim women want to participate in gymnastics, they have to find outfits which cover the ‘aurat’ and this, in turn, might not be suitable for the sport.’

Showing his support for Farah, Malaysian minister for youth and sports tweeted, ‘In gymnastics Farah wowed the judges and brought home gold. In her deeds only the almighty judges her. Not you. Leave our athletes alone.’

Farah herself tweeted, ‘Empty cans make the most noise.’ And thanked her fans and supporters for defending her by writing a post in a Facebook group, ‘I would just like to express my sincerest gratitude to all of you who have been supporting me. It is such an overwhelming feeling to have had such a great and positive response from all of you. Thank you so much.’
