A man convicted of killing his girlfriend in her dorm room at a Pennsylvania university will spend 20 to 40 years in prison.
A Lancaster County judge sentenced 21-year-old Gregory Orrostieta on Wednesday to the maximum possible penalty.
Orrostieta was convicted in May of third-degree murder in the death of Millersville University freshman Karlie Hall in February 2015.
Orrostieta told authorities he got into a fight with his girlfriend over spilled noodles, but he said she had been drinking and fell and hit her head.
A forensic pathologist who testified during the trial said that Hall had actually died after being beaten and strangled.
Orrostieta was found trying to administer CPR to Hall after calling 911, but authorities say he was faking that and she had been dead for hours.
Hall’s twin sister Kristen, who also attended the same school but lived in a different dorm, told the court that she was no fan of her sister’s boyfriend.
‘I told her she should consider breaking up with him,’ she said. ‘I thought he was controlling. I didn’t like the way the relationship looked.’
That weekend, Orrostieta was visiting his girlfriend at college and Kristen says the couple and a group of friends got together to drink mixed drinks in a dorm room before going out to a fraternity party.
At the mixer, Kristen says things seemed tense between the couple.
‘Greg was yelling at Karlie, and Karlie was becoming distant,’ Kristen Hall said. ‘I walked up to her (Karlie) and told her to dance with me, but Greg would not let her leave his side. He had her by the arm.’
Kristen says Orrostieta later apologized to her and the group all went out to pizza.
The group got together the following night for dorm room drinks again, followed by yet another fraternity party. At the end of the night, she parted ways with her sister, only to learn about her death a few hours later.
‘The next morning, people came to my dorm room to tell me Karlie passed away,’ her sister said.
The killing was the first at the school in its 161-year history.
