Recently the eminent Barbie doll is introduced by three new body sizes, petite, tall and curvy, but the 24-year-old Haneefah Adam, who is a Muslim girl from Nigeria, has paved the way for ‘Hijarbie’, a hijab-wearing Barbie.

She has created an Instagram account a few months ago where she displayed her Barbie sporting a hijab in a set of modified dresses which she saw herself.

She shared that these dresses are “inspired by the normal everyday look of a hijabi girl.”

Barbie Style, which is a popular Instagram account, provided her with the idea, “It got me thinking about how I’d actually like to see a doll dressed up like I would have — covered up,” Adam further added, “I was mulling over the idea for about three months while I was still studying for my master’s degree in the UK. When I got back to Nigeria, I went to the mall, purchased a doll, dressed it up, documented it and here we are.’’ She continued by saying, “My hope with this account is to create a positive impact and awareness.”

“I want Hijabi to inspire the Muslim girl child. It’s about having a doll that looks like her, that represents her own cultural and religious background,”

Adam knows the importance of hijab and follows it by wearing a scarf and wishes that this doll would reflect those girls who cover their heads.

“Hijab means modesty to me and it’s my unique identity. It’s my crown and it represents my own personal control over the way I want to be seen. Not leaving out the fact that it’s a religious induction,”

She further added that “By ‘hijabifying’ a doll, a sense of value is created [for] a Muslim girl,” and this has attracted rest of the world. Adam continued that “it’s being seriously worked on now. So they will be available for sale soon.”
