Pakistan win their 1st Test ever in Sri-Lanka after 9 years91 views
GALLE: Pakistan had convincingly won their first ever match in Sri-Lanka after nine years by 10 wickets, heroics of Sarfraz Ahmad, Asad Shafiq and Yasir Shah guided Greenshirts to the victory at Galle.
Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq won the toss and elected to bowl first in the rain effected match which officially started on day-2, after the first day of the first match was washed out by the rain. The Islanders managed to put a score of 300 runs in their 1st-innings, opening batsman Kaushal Silva was the highest scorer from Sri-Lanka with his 125 runs.
Pakistan’s spearhead Wahab Riaz and off-spinner Zulfiqar Babar manged to pick three wickets a peace, all-rounder Muhammad Hafeez and leg-spinner Yasir Shah bagged two wickets each. Sri-Lanka’s Mr. Experince Kumar Sangakkara just manged to score fifty runs in their 1st-innings.
Once again the top order of Pakistan failed to respond as opening batsman Ahmad Shahzad(9), Hafeez(2) and one-down batsman Azhar Ali(8) managed to score just 19 runs. With the contribution of the middle order Greenshirts posted a score of 417 runs in their 1st-innings, left Sri-Lanka trailing by 117 runs.
Asad Shafiq was the highest scorer for Pakistan in their 1st-innings with his 131 runs, followed by wicket-keeper batsman Sarfraz who couldn’t complete his century and was clean-bowled by Dhamika Prasad on 96 runs.
In the 3rd-session of the fourth day, Sri-Lanka started their 2nd-innings. The first Test match was heading towards a draw, but the unpredictable Pakistan team turned the tables as they removed Kaushal Silva on 5 runs and Sangakkara on 18 in the ending overs of day-4.
Yasir Shah picked up seven wickets in the 2nd-innings of Sri-Lanka, Wahab Riaz picked two and Zulfiqar Babar clinched one wicket to end the 2nd-innings of the Islanders on a total of 206 runs, leaving 90 runs to win for Pakistan.
The opening pair of Pakistan Shahzad(43*) and Hafeez(46*) scored 92 runs in 11.2 overs to end the match rapidly, both of them demolished Sri-Lanka’s bowling attack in their 2nd-innings to win the match by a comfortable margin of 10 wickets. The first Test victory for Pakistan on Sri-Lankan soil, Greenshirts lead the three match Test series by 1-0.
Sarfraz Ahmad was the Player of the Match with his fast and furious 96 runs on 86 balls, in addition to his three catches behind the stumps and three stumpings. The 2nd Test match between Sri-Lanka and Pakistan will start on 25th June at Colombo.
