Peace Bridge vandalism could be difficult to repair

The City of Calgary is facing a difficult repair job for its iconic Peace Bridge.

Three glass panels on the downtown span have been broken due to vandalism. A fourth is believed to have cracked due to thermal expansion. The City put out a request for proposal last week seeking contractors to replace the glass panes, but it could be a complicated process. Two of the panels are on the roof of the bridge, and two are on the underside.

“There’s a groove in the steel and the panel rest in it from the outside,” said Mac Logan, the City’s general manager of transportation.Logan explained that the bridge’s architect, Santiago Calatrava, designed the glass panes to be installed by raising them up through the bridge frame, turning them flat and lowering them into place. But the City is open to creative ideas from interested companies.
