PM Sharif to chair key meeting on Panama Papers today

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to chair an ‘important’ meeting of his party leaders and ministers to discuss Panama Papers.

The premier is likely to discuss proposals of his party leaders in formation of judicial commission to probe the Panama leaks.

Ministers and senior party leaders will give briefing to the PM about their contacts with opposition leaders on Panama Papers investigation. The meeting may also discuss strategy to cope with PTI’s impending protest plan.

Soon after arrival to Pakistan, PM Sharif held a meeting Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and discussed the prevailing political situation.

Mr. Sharif returned to Pakistan on Tuesday night after his medical treatment in the United Kingdom. He was welcomed by Finance Minister Dar along with assistants Tariq Fatemi and Asif Kirmani upon his arrival

On the occasion, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, PM’s daughter, tweeted that the prime minister’s return to the country was a moment of silence for those who claimed that her father will not return.

The prime minister on April 5 had announced the formation of a commission to investigate allegations made in the Panama Papers that linked his family to a series of offshore companies.

The leaked papers, comprising 11.5 million documents from Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca, exposes how some of the world’s most powerful people have secreted their money offshore, and also implicated Sharif’s sons Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz.
