Sadiq Khan vows to work for better life of London people

LONDON: London’s newly-elected Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that he will work hard for improving the standards of living of his citizens.

In his victory speech, Sadiq Khan thanked voters and supporters for electing him as London’s new Mayor.

“Thank you London. London is the greatest city in the world. I am so proud of our city. I am deeply humbled by the hope and trust you have placed in me today,” Khan said.

The Pakistani-born candidate said that he wanted every single Londoner to get the opportunities that the city gave to him and his family. “The opportunities, not just to survive but to thrive,” he added.

Speaking on the negative campaigning against him, the Labour Party candidate said that the poll was not without controversy and he was proud that the British capital chose unity over division and hope over fear.

“Fear doesn’t make us safer, it only makes us weaker, and the politics of fear is simply not welcome in our city,” he added.

He said that he will work to provide employment opportunities and cheap public transportation to the people of his city.

Sadiq Khan, the son of a Pakistani bus driver, became London’s first Muslim mayor on Friday, seeing off Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith, the son of a billionaire financier in the London mayoral polls.
