Sharapova, Djokovic & Serena qualify for last 16 at Wimbledon

LONDON: Defending Champions Novak Djokovic, 2004 Champions Maria Sharapova and World No.1 Serena Williams have cemented their spot in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

This is for the seventh consecutive time that Serbia’s Novak Djokovic has qualified for the last 16 of Wimbledon, this time he defeated Australia’s Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

World No.4 Maria Sharapova has also qualified for the fourth round, after beating Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-3. For a place in quarter-finals, the Russian tennis star Sharapova will face either Germany’s Andrea Petkovic or Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.

The 33 year-old American and five-times Wimbledon Champion Serena Williams faced the toughest match of his life, it was a thriller. She defeated Britain’s Heather Watson 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, in the final set the home-town girl was serving for the match at 5-4 sets a peace.

When Serena bounced back and turned the tables, in the same set Serena was trailing by 3-0 and after winning the match she proved her class to be the World No.1. In her place for quarter-finals, Serena will face her elder sister Venus Williams.

The last time they both faced each other in a Grand Slam was when Serena beat her in 2009 Wimbledon final, but in their last meeting at Montreal 2014 Venus won. Anyhow, Serena still has the upper-hand by a 14-11 record tally.

Talking about her match against Venus, Serena said that to her Venus is more important than winning the match.
