Sharapova eyes to end 11 years of Serena dominance

LONDON: Defending champion Serena Williams and 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova will face-off for the 20th time in their career for the semi-finals at Center Court.

The rivalry between Serena and Sharapova started here at the Center Court back in 2004, when both of them faced each other for the first time in their career at the Wimbledon final. The 17 year-old Russian stunned the World No.1 American and won her first Grand Slam title.

Now since 2004, Sharapova has been unable to defeat Serena and their record tally goes in the favor of the 33 year-old American 17-2. Serena has won their last 16 meetings, defeating Sharapova for three major titles in 2007, French Open final in 2013 and Australian Open final in 2015.

The 20-times Grand Slam winner Serena has also won her previous four semi-finals against the five-times Grand Slam champion Sharapova, she also defeated the Russian in the fourth-round of Wimbledon in 2010 and in the 2012 Olympic final at All England Club.

While talking to the media, Serena said that she loves playing Maria. According to her Sharapova brings out the best of her, just like the Australian Open final which was very entertaining in her opinion.

The American said that she has no pressure for the upcoming match, as she has won all the Grand Slam multiple times and she is just here to enjoy it.

On the other hand, 28 year-old Sharapova said that she knows that she doesn’t have much success against Serena. And she would love to change that around, that’s how she look at it.

She also said that they both know each other’s game very well and she will love to face her again at the Centre Court.
