Taliban’s leader Mullah Omar ‘dead’ since two years

Taliban’s leader Mullah Omar is now confirmed ‘dead’ since April 2013 by the Afghan government.

The Afghan government along with Pakistan and other nations were uncertain of the whereabouts of Mullah Omar since 2001, but today the Afghani government issued a press release and confirmed that he has been dead for the past two years.

“The government of Afghanistan believes that grounds for the Afghan peace talks are more paved now than before, and thus calls on all armed opposition groups to seize the opportunity and join the peace process,”

As this statement comes from their government they are now hopeful to join in peace talks with the Taliban and hope to resolve issues.

The Taliban denied these claims of their leader, Mullah Omar being dead. Mullah Omar has not been seen publicly since 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan that toppled the Taliban government in Kabul.

U.S. government has not yet confirmed Mullah Omar’s death, but White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Shultz told Al Jazeera;

“we believe the reports of his death are credible”.
