Remembering Nargis Dutt, one of India’s greatest actresses, on her 86th birth anniversary today.
Nargis Dutt, her beauty was ethereal, her charm and talent legendary.
For many, Nargis Dutt would be remembered for her ethereal beauty and graceful performance. For others it was her inherent simplicity and love for humanity that etched a place in their hearts.
When Nargis and Sunil Dutt first met on the sets of Balraj Sahni’s Do Bigha Zameen, he was a student and an aspiring actor and she was already an established star. But they did not get married until several years later, soon after they starred as mother and son in Mehboob Khan’s 1957 classic, Mother India. While shooting for the film Mother India, Sunil Dutt sent a proposal for marriage and Nargis accepted it. Eventually, she got married to Sunil Dutt on March 11, 1958. She gave birth to three children, namely Sanjay, Anju, and Priya.
Nargis was also involved in her husband’s production venture. Along with Sunil Dutt, Nargis formed the Ajanta Arts Cultural Troupe, which involved several leading actors and singers of the time and held stage shows at border areas. Nargis was also involved with a lot of charity work. In early 1970s, she became the first patron of Spastics Society of India, and her subsequent work with the organisation brought her recognition as a social worker, and later a Rajya Sabha nomination in 1980. In 1982, the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation was established in her memory. The award for best feature film on national integration in the annual National Film Awards ceremony is called the Nargis Dutt Award in her honour.
