Turmeric is useful for Colon Cancer



In a new research study, researchers are of the view that a compound located in turmeric, a spice broadly employed in curries, can perform a much vital role in averting and treating colon cancer, which regularly is developed by lifestyle factors, for example, diet.

The researchers discovered that mixture of two plant composites that have medicinal features – curcumin and silymarin – posses guarantee in treating colon cancer.

Curcumin is the vigorous component in the spice turmeric and silymarin is a part of milk thistle, which has been employed to treat liver disease. Uthayashanker Ezekiel, who is the lead author and an Associate Professor at Saint Louis University in Missouri, US, has stated that “Phytochemicals may offer alternate therapeutic approaches to cancer treatments and avoid toxicity problems and side effects that chemotherapy can cause,”

The results were presented in the Journal of Cancer. The investigators studied a line of colon cancer cells in a laboratory model.

They discovered that treating the cells at first with curcumin, then with silymarin was much useful in combating cancer than treating the cells with either phytochemical only.

Ezekiel further continued that “The combination of phytochemicals inhibited colon cancer cells from multiplying and spreading. In addition, when the colon cancer cells were pre-exposed to curcumin and then treated with silymarin, the cells underwent a high amount of cell death,”

Ezekiel, who is an alumnus of Madurai Kamaraj University in Tamil Nadu, witnesses promise in employing the phytochemicals to assist avert colon cancer, but stated that the research study is a first round cell study, with further research to the lead prior to scientists recognize if the composites are a useful treatment for people who have colon cancer.

Scientists after that would require researching how the curcumin and silymarin impact the acts of molecules, for example, genetic transcription and expression, which can be a reason for cells to alter, Ezekiel added.

Ezekiel further clarified that “We still have much to learn, and for now, it’s so much safer to add a little spice to your diet and get your curcumin from foods that contain turmeric, such as curry, rather than taking high doses of the compound,”
