WASHINGTON: The iconic Pakistani philanthropist, Abdul Sattar Edhi was one of the world’s great humanitarians, said Ned Price spokesperson of the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House in a statement while praising Edhi’s unparalleled commitment serving humanity.
Abdul Sattar Edhi, who dedicated his life to the poor, died on Friday at a medical centre in Karachi after a long kidney failure triggering an outpouring of grief in the nation for a man who surpassed social, ethnic and religious divisions.
He was laid to rest at the Edhi Village on Saturday after a state funeral attended by thousands of people.
“We offer our condolences to Bilquis and their four children, the millions of people around the world whose lives he touched, and to the people of Pakistan, who have lost a heroic servant of humanity,” Price added in his statement issued by the White House.
Tributes pour in from across the world after it received news of Abdul Sattar Edhi’s death. Several local and international dignitaries, celebrities and organisations honoured the Pakistani philanthropist for his social work.
Edhi was also the third Pakistani to have received a military honour at his funeral since the 1980s. Before him, the founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah and General Zia-ul-Haq had been given a state funeral.
