Young mom’s instinct can lead to baby’s death

Researchers stated in a report that though juvenile mothers perhaps aware of safe sleeping practices for decreasing abrupt infant death, or crib death, rather a small number of them do not pursue these considerations that their instincts are more correct.

Teenage mothers considered that their instincts were much perfect than any other person, even when those instincts are in straight disagreement to the specialist recommendation and safe sleep suggestions.

Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), which involves sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), is the most prominent reason of death in infants from one month to one year of age, and mother’s age below 20 years is linked with an elevated peril of SIDS.

Michelle Caraballo, who is the lead author from the University of Colorado in the US, stated that “We sought to understand participants’ information sources and factors motivating decision-making about their infants’ sleep practices,”

The research team employed 43 teenage mothers from high school day-care centers to contribute in seven focus groups regarding safe sleep for their infants (2-21 months of age).

The results recommend that much of the teenage mothers were well-known with SIDS and the suggestions in opposition to co-sleeping and the use of blankets and pillows in the baby’s sleeping spot.

Caraballo further continued in the paper, which was cited in The Journal of Pediatrics, that “We learned that almost all teenage mothers were already aware of the recommendations, yet they were making deliberate decisions to practice unsafe behaviors,”

The most common causes provided for co-sleeping were the opinion that babies appeared to sleep better and were secure in bed with them and a lot of employed blankets for the reason that they considered that babies are more relaxed with blankets.

The authors continued by saying that “Teenage mothers should be asked to improve safe sleep behaviors,”
